Young Gabriel (Gabe) is born into a strict, religious order orphanage in 1918. During his early years there, he is treat cruelly and at times brutally by a tough Mother Superior. Noticed for his intelligence he is overlooked for potential adoption and singled out for the religious Luminary in France. Although at times distressing to read of Gabe's torment at being sheltered from the outside world, it is enlightening to see him leave the orphanage to begin his journey to his new home with his new found companion Father Samual.
His new experiences meeting people (especially with Mary and Joe), his journey on the fascinating Zeppelin and his relationship with a Countess are a delight to read. So well described and narrated, the storyline just keeps you gripped during his whole journey.
Once at the Luminary he begins his religious studies but soon becomes involved in mysteries, dangerous secrets, hidden tunnels and new friendships.
"The First Sign" written by M.J. Tuohy is a very clever and well thought out book, written by an obviously very talented author and I hope that "the end of the beginning" indicates there will be another book following Gabe's life!
