World Suicide Prevention Day: Self-Care with Self-Help Books

Do you know that approximately one million people die by suicide every year? That for every 1 suicide 25 people make a suicide attempt? That depression is the most common psychiatric disorder in people who die by suicide? (International Association for Suicide Prevention (IASP).

Alarmed by the growing number of lives claimed by suicide, IASP created World Suicide Prevention Day (WSPD) in 2003 to raise awareness about suicide and explore ways through which it can be prevented. In which it is observed worldwide on 10th September every year.

All of us go through our highs and lows. It’s natural that as we move forward, challenges will accompany us. However, due to a multitude of reasons such as psychological, cultural, social, trauma and loss, an individual’s ability to cope can become limited. World Suicide Prevention Day focuses effort around spreading awareness of the reasons for suicide, removing the taboo surrounding the subject and the education of prevention activities in order to reach those struggling around the world.

Preventing suicide requires the effort of many, experts suggest that in such cases, the best course is to reach out to a friend, family member, counsellor, or helpline and share your feelings.
