Alberto Martín has spent many years studying and practicing Christianity, Sufism, Buddhism, and Advaita Vedanta (in that sequence) plus, at one time, the religion of the Crows (a native tribe of N. America). “For me, it has been universalism all along ever since I read Plato when I was 15 years old. Lately my attention has been focused on Shankara’s Advaita Vedanta and non-duality.”

For this author, Plato and Shankara say practically all that can be said about reality and the way towards its assimilation and exemplification.

In this work Martín answers many of the probing questions anyone of us is led to ask along our lives.

Alberto M. Garcia practiced as a general surgeon in Toronto, Canada. He also studied western philosophy at Toronto University. Philosophy, particularly Greek, has been a dominating interest for him. Later, it has been Hindu philosophy, particularly Advaita Vedanta and non-duality.

Publications: Sleeping, Dreaming, Awakening (Sofia 2008), Frithjof SchuonandAdvaita Vedanta (Sacred Web, 26: 2010), Unmanifest-manifest, Becoming-Being (Prabuddha Bharata (2019).

He is also the author of a book of poetry (2007), and another book in Spanish, Por el Camino de Santiago (2003), a sustained reflection on the spiritual path (the “inner journey”).

  • Dr. Ramesam Vemuri, Author, “A Primer on Advaita,” 2002.

Dr. Alberto Martin Garcia is a well-respected Surgeon who lost not a single patient in a long blemishless career in Canada and also a born philosopher who mastered a wide variety of intricate abstract thought from both the East and West, including Sufism. He is a gentle and unassuming friend who lives presently in Spain with his loving wife. His focus now is on Advaita.

We are all indeed benefited by the distilled “Wisdom” filtered through his over nine decades of fruitful life benevolently shared by him in this book compiled from his Answers to many seekers on Quora.

Some sample gems from the book:

Vedas contain the most fundamental and ‘advanced’ knowledge there is, though usually portrayed in the form of paradox, analogy, metaphor, story, etc.

Consciousness is not an irreducible phenomenon or datum; it is reality itself or a name or symbol for reality.

We human beings are not just phenomena or transient beings that are interlinked in a causal chain. There is a spirit in us which is FREE—and spiritus ubi vult spirat.

The body is perfectly made for life on earth.

That which cannot be expressed by words but by which the tongue speaks—know that to be Brahman. Brahman is not the being who is worshiped by men From kena Upanishad.

‘Awareness’ is another name for ‘Consciousness’: ultimate reality or ground (substratum) into which everything else—one after another—is reducible. This unparalleled account or description you will only find in Advaita Vedanta.

Serenity or equanimity, as an unchanging condition or ‘state,’ is beyond happiness and or suffering.

You can be knowledgeable with other men’s knowledge, but not wise with other men’s wisdom.

Does paradise exist? The answer of the Sufi is: (yes) it is here, it is here, it is here!

The whole of the history of Western philosophy is a series of footnotes to Plato – Alfred Norhhead.

Not all physicists are reductionist; some of them have mutated into philosophers with a workable understanding of the core of Vedic teachings.’

Consciousness or awareness cannot be explained by empirical science; it will always be a purely subjective experience.

There is something to know, ponder over and digest for every one that reads the book. It’s definitely worth one’s time to read, ingest and help transform oneself. –
