This is the story of the greatest scandal inflicted on British servicemen and women in modern times: drug-induced violence and suicide – and an officer determined to find the truth.

It was supposed to be a wonder drug that would save the world from malaria. But soon after Lariam was brought to international markets in the late 1980s, users of this handy, once-a-week pill began to experience shocking side-effects. Yet over the coming decades, as the drug became implicated in ever-increasing acts of unexplained violence, homicide and suicide, the Ministry of Defence continued to force Lariam on tens, or perhaps hundreds, of thousands of unsuspecting people deployed to some of the world’s most dangerous places.

Enduring years of Lariam-induced nightmares, former soldier Andrew Marriott realised something was horribly wrong; not just with the drug itself but with the institutions responsible for its use and safety. So began a journey towards the truth, a truth that vested interests in the United Kingdom and around the globe were determined to conceal.

In a unique exposé of an entirely preventable pharmaceutical disaster, Marriott turns a spotlight on the murky world of clandestine military and industrial research in the United States in which Lariam was developed. With other survivors, including some very courageous women, he undertakes a forensic examination of a scandal extending to the upper echelons of government and the armed forces. A culture of betrayal and dishonour had imperilled those defending our country to the most insidious and silent form of friendly fire.

Andrew Marriott was an army officer for over thirty years, seeing service in conflicts in Europe, the Middle East and West Africa. He received a commendation for devotion to duty as a platoon commander in Northern Ireland and was later awarded an MBE. He has since become an archaeologist and, after taking degrees at the University of York, in 2018, he was awarded a doctorate by Newcastle University.

He is married with two daughters and lives in North Yorkshire.

A veritable tour de force. An indictment of the nightmarish history of mefloquine's development."

Andrew Marriott has written an important book. He is a good author who writes well. The forensic way he examines the appalling impacts of Larium upon many members of the UK Armed Forces (and their families) that were given the drug (with no alternatives offered) is detailed and convincing. As he examines the evidence, it becomes increasingly clear that Larium was used when its dangerous side effects were known about, or should have been, by senior military leaders, including medical staff.
As I read further into the book, I got increasingly angry about the dreadful lives, and in many cases deaths, of Larium victims. Indeed, I had to put the book down on several occasions and go for a walk to give me the strength to continue reading this ghastly tale. As the father of a serving member of HM Armed Forces, I can only give thanks that my son was exposed to Larium when he served in malarial areas.
The book should be compulsory reading for anybody who gets to senior rank in the Armed Forces, and for anybody going abroad to areas where malaria is rife.

This book exposes the government, senior politicians, and very senior military staff who bury their heads in the sand and completely deny culpability and justice for veterans they instructed to use a drug that was known to have horrific side effects. Writing from personal experience of sleepless nights and nightmares Andrew has collaborated with families who have suffered bereavement and lack of transparency in seeking answers from the powers that be. This book continues the fight for answers and hopefully justice for those concerned.

  • ‘The best place to be a veteran?’ A critical Defence exposé and effects on its best assets!

An important and accurate exposé, entrenched in ‘Lived Experience’, integrity, and in-depth research. The injustices revealed in this emotional rollercoaster, should leave the hardest member of “the system” with a lump in their throat, and questioning their “expert advice!” An OUTSTANDING book, with an inspirational author. Lest We Forget!
