Derek A Olley, born in Tiptree in Essex, in 1931; attended St Lukes School until 14 and joined RAF’s First Entry Boy Entrants at age 15 as an aero-engine mechanic apprentice. He served in the UK and Malta, and the Middle East. He, then, migrated to Australia at the request of the Australian Department of Civil Aviation with wife and three daughters to establish a Non-Destructive Testing Training school.


He joined the Aeronautical Research Laboratory in Melbourne as a crystallographer. He was employed in Materials Division researching Non-Destructive Testing. In 1980, he was transferred to RAAF Amberley Queensland as senior technical officer NDT.


After getting retired in 1996, he currently works at RAAF Heritage Centre, restoring antique aircraft and equipment.
