Basabi developed an interest in writing children’s books during her stints as a teacher of English. Her first three illustrated books were about the life and times of an adorable Maltese called Poochie who spent thirteen eventful years with her family. The character of Lottie is based on her pet Labrador Libby, who has a wide range of interests: chasing wild roosters, playing with squirrels and a neighbourhood cat, listening intently to family conversations and devising ingenious ways to wrangle tidbits during family mealtimes!
“Lottie at the Gallery” by Basabi Banerjee is a delightful children’s book that brings the art world to life through the perspective of a loving and playful dog. In her dreams, through Lottie’s curious eyes the book introduces young readers not only to the wonders of art but also to the charm and history of the gallery setting, making the story both entertaining and educational. With a boundless enthusiasm for paintings, sculptures and the magic of a museum Lottie takes readers on a lovely journey admiring the beauty of historic building that houses it, subtly emphasizing the importance of heritage spaces. The book’s many colorful illustrations and frequent rhymes make it a perfect pick for parents and teachers wanting to nurture children’s interest for the arts in a fun and exciting way . The book not only entertains but also educates, stimulating interest in young readers and encouraging them to find the beauty in art. Overall, Lottie at the Gallery is a beautifully crafted story that sparks curiosity and imagination making it a wonderful read for young children.
I absolutely enjoyed reading the book. The stories and illustrations transported me on a joyous journey through art history and Singapore’s historic sites.
Though meant for children, I read the beautifully illustrated book 'Lottie at the Gallery' in one breadth. The gentle character of the Magic Palm introducing Lottie (in her dream) to the vast National Gallery of Singapore and the adventure therein added spice to the story. The vocabulary is rich. The kids may need help but that is the reward they get at the end. Use of rhymes made the description interesting for kids and grownups alike. Highly recommended.
A fun and entertaining book! What colourful characters. I simply love Lotti for taking me on a delightful tour around Singapore's rich art history. For someone who has hardly visited the National Gallery in the last 2-3 years, this book is truly educational and mesmerizing. I must commend the author for her creativity and for writing so beautifully. I highly recommend this book to ALL age groups. Simply breathtaking!
