Jim Bryde, sled dog racer, always had the ambition to place first in the pinnacle of Britain's sled dog racing, the competition ‘Aviemore'. This is the story of his life shared with Siberian Huskies; the trouble, love and tragedy that can come with a passion for racing and indeed for the dogs themselves.
Jim's beloved dogs include the loveable Joker, stubborn Dansa, the placid and friendly Bandit, but could it be Gun, son of Fly and Maji, and Gun's subsequent bloodline, who can finally lead Jim's team to victory, after many years of placing second?
While Jim's personal life sometimes overlaps into the world of racing, the passion for his hobby can be felt in every word of this endearing account of sled dog racing. To those interested in owning Siberian Huskies and racing sled dogs, his own individual accounts of his experiences are full of valuable tips.

Jim was born in the dockside town of Birkenhead Merseyside. At 18, he joined the Royal Navy. Upon leaving he travelled and worked in Europe, America, Canada and Australia. Finally, the author retrained as a landscape gardener, highlighted by managing landscaping of Adventure Land Disney Land Paris.
Jim met Cherry in 1984 and bought his first husky, Hustler, in 1987. This changed his life and began his lifetime passion for dogsledding. The author retired to France in 2012 where he lives with Cherry, his 6 remaining huskies, 4 cats and Wizzy, the Border Terrier.

What an amazing book! Sled Dog Gun tells of all the trials and tribulations of dog sled racing; the good, the bad and the coming second at Aviemore seven times. As a fellow Musher it is easy to see Bryde’s utter determination to breed and race a champion team of Siberian Huskies on the prestigious stage that was Aviemore (The event sadly is no longer run after 40 incredible years). The book takes you on a journey. It will make you laugh, cry and want to buy a team of huskies and head for the nearest forest. But at the Books heart are, of course, Bryde’s pack of Siberian Huskies. Including Cougar, Joker, Dansa, Gun and Fly to name a few. These dogs capture the heart of the reader through the heartfelt way that Bryde writes about them. Brydes love of his dog's shines through on every page and shows, whether win or lose, he knew that he was always taking the best dog's home from every race. A wonderful read that I would recommend to every dog lover I know. Utterly Fantastic.

Enjoyed reading, engaging writing style. An excellent account of sled dog racing and an even better recounting of your personal experiences. All those positive reviews well-deserved. Wolf in the Kitchen sitting on my study desk, for when time allows.
