  Sally Gaunt's new novel The Princess and the Pirate is a captivating adventure story that should appeal to readers of all ages. Set against the backdrop of the Portuguese dominance of the Indian Ocean in the 16th Century, the plot centres on an Indian Princess promised in marriage to an African ruler. Trade networks at that time united both sides of the Indian Ocean and the whole area saw a power struggle between the Portuguese and local rulers further complicated by the raids of pirates. The line between heroes and villains was not always clear. Gaunt makes this history come alive as the resourceful heroine outwits her enemies. This is an endearing and gripping book. Written in lively clear English, Gaunt's novel weaves an enthralling tale that has much to say about women's empowerment and the long record of cultural diversity.

  Well written, fast-moving plot. kept me intrigued till the last page. Great characters, and lots of interesting personalities.
  Recommended for ages 15 plus.
  Will buy a copy for my grandson for Christmas, sure he will love it.
