Scott McLean is a Canadian historian living in the south of England, who has spent most of his life teaching, researching, and writing about history and archaeology. His passion for history has led him to tramp about battlefields and medieval villages, Roman ruins, and prehistoric landscapes, dig up ancient rubbish we call ‘artefacts or treasure’ and travel to far-off places. He is Director of Explore History Ltd., and when he isn’t writing or podcasting spends his time, not unlike Indiana Jones, in search of musty smelling documents and ancient relics.

The Unusual Histories of a Curious Dog by Scott McLean is a wonderfully written novel for kids, and kids at heart, to enjoy and learn a little about history. When a sneaky, little garden gnome sends the playful pup, Biscuit back in time through a rabbit hole in her family’s garden the exciting and mysterious adventures begin! From escaping the Great Fire of London in 1666 to becoming an adored mascot for the village Home Guard during WWII, Biscuit can’t help but get into - and out of - trouble! She makes new friends, and outsmarts new enemies. But she always finds her way back home again. I can’t wait to see where the scheming garden gnome will send Biscuit next! What a clever way to introduce future historians to real and significant moments from the past. As an elementary school teacher, I will definitely use this book as a read-aloud in my class. With adorable characters and entertaining adventures, it’s sure to be a big hit!

This book takes the reader on a journey through the ages, for all ages. Biscuit’s curiosity and taste for adventure (and sausages!) will lead to an endearing read for parents and children alike. Dr. McLean’s storytelling brings historical events, such as the great fire of London, and life in the British Countryside during the 1940s, into a format that is as educational, as it is emotional and demonstrates a triumph of care for your neighbour and overcoming major life events. This style of children’s book is something parents should be snatching off the shelf as it will not only broaden a young audience's mind but also invoke unique conversation for the world’s future travellers and explorers!
