Lukie and Harry, His Pet Snake
For parents who have unique and diverse children. This book has been written for children who do not fit into the norms and love snakes and lizards. Children with special needs have many special gifts. As the mother of a special need child, I have learned many lessons. I have learned patience, tolerance and kindness in the face of adversity. There have been many uphill battles to receive services for my son. Despite all this, he continues to smile and he lights up my world. At one point, my son was nonverbal for three years. His method of communication was pointing or screaming. The first word he spoke was ‘teddy’ and I could not stop crying for three days. To all parents who have special needs kids, I wrote this book to bring hope to the parents and the kids. My son now is able to speak and I cherish every word that comes from him. Animals can get through to kids when human adults cannot. My son loves animals. His favourite are snakes, lizards and spiders. Though our battles during times of adversities can be very strong, we as parents are required to be warriors for our children so that one day they may have their voice in society. Every child deserves a right to make their contribution to society by their diversity, their brilliance, their uniqueness and by just being children.
