Reálta – A New Star Is Born
Amid the sudden pain and anguish of losing a new baby, whether by miscarriage, still birth or new born death, the question ‘What happens next?’ inevitably arises.
On December 10th, 2012 my partner and I were thrown into that abyss of hurt, anguish and pain that comes with the loss of a new baby or pregnancy. In our case, we were almost twelve weeks pregnant as we arrived to the early scan unit of the Rotunda Hospital, Dublin for a 2:30 pm appointment. Our world was turned upside down upon the news that there was no heartbeat. Our baby had died.
As devastating as that was, we sought some comfort in the fact that unlike years gone by, nowadays there is a service where families who experience this unimaginable loss can get to celebrate (ever so briefly) the life of their new baby or pregnancy with a very personal remembrance service. In the months and years since, I have longed to find ways to commemorate and pay respects to all families who have experienced new baby/pregnancy loss of this type.
Then comes the ‘What happens next?’ question.
What happens to our new babies who are lost by miscarriage, still-birth or new born deaths? Why has life failed them? Why has God failed them? There must be an understandable reason that these angels are chosen for something other than life. Then I looked up into the dark night sky with its millions of stars shining brightly down on us and...

Songs Best Left Unsung
The ancient war that plunged the once thriving civilization of Breya into terminal decline is but a fading memory now. The world, a shadow of its former self, is slowly dying, although there are very few who realise it yet alone comprehend why. The Fount – the source of life that has been feeding the world and giving powers to its Loremancers for millennia – is drying up.
The war is all but forgotten, but there remain echoes. Whispers of the long forbidden magic, the dark Lore of dreadful and cruel powers that had once fueled the vast conflict that brought Breya to its knees. Like discordant notes in a symphony, they corrupt the Fount and everyone arrogant or foolish enough to partake of their poison. Or so the Catechists teach.
However, sometimes we have no power over what we want to hear. In two very different parts of Breya, hundreds of leagues apart, unexpected Talents awaken in two unsuspecting teens who suddenly find themselves at the receiving end of the Catechists’ justice. The Land of Faerie
Do you have a light in your back garden or on your flat balcony? You know, the type which hangs from a bracket on the wall or from a post holding birdfeeders, perhaps. Have you ever looked closely at it when the light is shining? Well, Molly did just that and saw strange creatures moving about inside it.
It turned out they were faeries, from The Land of Faerie: a fantastical world where pixies, faeries, unicorns, and other magical creatures live. We can briefly experience what it is like through our dreams – providing we have enough imagination. But Molly discovered it is possible to see and talk to some of these magical creatures not just in her dreams but also when she was awake: through what the faeries called “gateways” between our world and theirs. Yes, you guessed it, the gateways are usually garden lights.
However, as you will know I am sure, such lights sometimes don’t work – most often because their batteries are run-down. When her light stopped working, Molly discovered that there was more to it than just some run-down batteries.
Desperate to be able to talk again with her friends – Maple Leaf, Iris Flower, and Mayfly – she found herself on a journey of discovery which involved learning more about global warming and global dimming. It also involved the whole of The Land of Faerie trying to solve the problems which such conditions were creating for their gateways to our world.
