The author spent the later years of his professional life as a surveyor in writing survey reports, proofs of evidence and other such documents where humour is not allowed in any circumstances. Even as an examiner on the subject of building construction, all must be kept serious. It is hardly surprising, therefore, that upon retirement he was anxious to write with a freedom hitherto denied to him and this story is the consequence of that relief.
