Life is full of challenges, and Bertie knows this all too well. What a charming and beautifully engaging first book from author Adrian Watson. The story of the mighty Bertie captures its intended audience’s attention from the off and his use of descriptive language with regard to the characters and places is most captivating. Lots of great undertones of important themes of morality, resilience, environmental issues amongst others running throughout along with some clear indications of the author’s military experiences to add to the excitement for the young reader! Hoping this is just the beginning for our friend Bertie !

A well-written, engaging tale that is told with sincerity and depth. Ideal for reading aloud to groups of children and I would especially recommend this book for teachers. There is an authenticity to the thrust of the narrative and it is clear that the author has devoted great care to recreating the world of 'Bertie'. There is also wit, symbolism and real character development ('Old Skyfall', the elder crane). I have shared quite a few books with young readers but this is one which truly merits a strong recommendation. I was pleasantly surprised to be drawn into the narrative myself and experienced an enjoyable read.
