Little Mouse lives in a little cottage at the bottom of an old oak tree in the beautiful Yorkshire countryside. She has lots of friends including Old Owl, who lives at the top of the old oak tree, Scruffy Mouse, who has a workshop where he makes and mends things, and Mattie Mouse, who lives in London and works for the London Parks and Gardens Trust. The story of Little Mouse is all about the adventures she has with her two friends.

Gillian Lishman lives in Yorkshire on a dairy farm with her husband, Ian. From here she runs her practice as a Reflexologist and Foot Health Practitioner. She has two grown up children Richard and Helen and four grandchildren. Gillian was inspired to write the story of Little Mouse during the lockdown period of the Covid-19 pandemic. Missing her grandchildren greatly during this period she decided to write a chapter per week and send it in the post, which caused great excitement. Gillian has never had any previous professional writing experience.

    Little Mouse by Gillian Lishman

What a delightful story of the adventures of Little Mouse and her friends!
In today’s busy world of computer generated games how lovely it is to follow the adventures of Little Mouse living in her big old oak tree . Children will be delighted to read this book themselves, or to have it read to them, perhaps as a bedtime story, and live in Little Mouse’s world for a short time.
The book is well illustrated with each adventure in glorious colour. A lovely read for young children with many educational gems about country living and wildlife.
    I highly recommend this book.

The Author’s grandchildren must have been so excited to receive a new page each week in the post during lockdown.

Little mouse is a kind, friendly and helpful little mouse that loves to help all of her friends that live in the countryside by Oak tree farm.
Her journeys take her on different adventures where she meets lots of friends that tell her about new and exciting things that happen in the countryside.

I found the book to be exciting and informative to younger reader's as it explains what lives in the countryside and where to find the inhabitants of different creature's.

This book is ideal for bedtime reading to little ones as a chapter a night is just long enough. Illustration of the book is vibrant in colour which keeps little eyes interested and focused in the story.

What a delightful and enchanting story book with eye-catching and colourful pictures. I really enjoyed the fact that the story subtly demonstrated the importance of friendships, kindness and the nature around us which is a significant message to our young children. I am sure any young child will be excited about and engrossed with Little Mouse's character and her adventures.

    Well done Gillian!

This is the most beautiful children's book with lovely illustrations throughout. The story about little mouse and her friends and what she gets up to is enchanting. There are parts which relate to farming life which is so endearing to children. I would say a child would equally enjoy having it read to them when very young, and later read it themselves, the chapters are a good length to deal with both scenarios.
    Overall a lovely lovely read.

A lovely book for children and their parents to read together. It is both engaging and educational. I will be sending copies to my cousins in Australia.

It was a lovely happy book with bright and cheerful illustrations. I liked the positive messages about friendship, acts of kindness and the gratitude expressed by all of the characters. The story involved traditions of the country mouse gathering food to eat everyday, baking, going out to talk to others and sharing her food. It was also informative and educational explaining the processes involved on the working farm and how Scruffy Mouse liked recycling and reusing materials of any kind to mend and make things. Little Mouse has a great spirit of adventure and the trip to London showed how rewarding this can be. She is a very busy mouse and this is relayed in a gentle and fun way.

This is a delightful collection of stories which Gillian has written in a consistent style. They are totally believable - that for example, Little Mouse meets the Queen pretty much by accident after traveling from Yorkshire to London to see a friend. The stories are charming without being sentimental, full of interest, evoking the countryside around Gillian's home. They are very child-focussed, with plenty for adults to read to younger children, and for older primary school aged children to read themselves. I can imagine this being favourite book throughout a child's first decade.

It explained life on a farm that would hold the attention of an adult reading the story as well as a child.

Small children will greatly enjoy having this delightful book read to them in chapters as bedtime stories with its charming insight into country life.
Congratulations to author, Gillian Lishman, for introducing a new generation to litter picking and recycling. It is very important to start a ‘green life’ at a young age.

A bright and colourful children’s book illustrating the enchanting adventures of Little Mouse and her friends. It’s a lovely book that will encourage children to want to read the stories and leave them wondering what’s going to happen in the next chapter!
It’s a book that can be read at storytime too so children can enjoy it together.

  • Christine

“Little Mouse is a collection of charming short stories suitable for reading to your children/grandchildren."
Probably aimed at slightly older than my 3 year grandson, whom I struggled to keep interested long enough for a whole story. Less words and more pictures would certainly appeal to him more. I can imagine it would hold girls and slightly older children’s attention for longer. I look forward to hearing more of Little Mouse and her friends in the future.”

  • Michelle Blenkhorn

We have just finished the wonderful Little Mouse book. My Two children have absolutely loved it! Especially My 5 year old son, it’s the first chapter book we have read together and he’s really got into it, he couldn’t wait to hear what exciting adventures Little Mouse and all her friends had been on in every chapter. The length of the chapters seems perfect to hold his concentration almond with the size of the font for him to follow and pick out words as he is starting to read more himself. A true sign of how much he’d enjoyed the book was when we got to the end and he felt a little sad so asked if we could start from the beginning and read it all again. We hope there will be another one to enjoy very soon.

  • Mrs A Stainthorp

I found Little Mouse a really delightful book and couldn’t wait to give one to my great grandchildren 7 years and 4 ,each chapter a story on its own, Little Mouse speaking her thoughts in simple everyday language, her actions described in great detail, every page beautifully illustrated. I am going to donate my copy to the local primary school.

  • Joanne Williams

Gillian has produced a delightful story book that is perfect for reading a chapter each night at bedtime. Her knowledge and love of the countryside shines through each page.

As a life long educationalist who recognises the critical importance of developing a love of books and stories in the emergent reader, I strongly recommend this first book.

I look forward to seeing Gillian's next publication.
