Book Description

When women set out to buy a car, they invariably take a man with them. Why is this so? Why is it that women are so poorly represented in all forms of motor sport?

Although women are increasingly infiltrating both these male-dominated arenas, they are still well within a minority. Why is this so?

One Lady Owner is unique in that it attempts to answer these vexed questions while at the same time delivering a reasoned and humorous dissertation on cars and on motor racing. It will inform and enliven, and, by the end, readers will have well-grounded and well-thought-out knowledge of both the industry and the sport.

This book is unique in its breadth of information. It’s a must-read for all women and men who set out to buy a car or to venture into the realms of motorsport.

Sandy Myhre is a long-time motoring and motorsport journalist. She was the first woman member of the NZ Motoring Writers’ Guild (the first woman life member), and also the first woman member of the NZ Motorsport Media Association and the first president. She has written eight books.

She brings a wealth of experience and knowledge to this book. It’s a reflection of her past and a healthy dissertation on cars and motor racing told pragmatically and with her well-known sense of humour.

  • Trish Menzies, Sunshine Coast, Australia

In One Lady Owner Sandy Myhre explores the important influence of women (including herself) within an overwhelmingly male dominated industry. She presents an historical overview and female perspective of all things motoring, and in particular motor racing, as well as drawing from extensive personal experience. One Lady Owner celebrates the women who have contributed to and undoubtedly shaped the industry to where it is today.

  • Linda Thompson, NZME, New Zealand

Sandy wanted to write differently for a female audience. Men write about torque and horsepower and power-to-weight ratios. She wanted to ask how many grocery bags or push chairs you could get in the back, were the seats comfortable, could you see over the steering wheel? Eventually her approach was accepted.

  • Lynn Barrow, Victoria, Australia

Just finished reading your book, very informative, you have certainly been so involved in the car industry and more!! You have done lots of research obviously, and so well written.

  • Liz Swanton, NSW, Australia

There’s not much about the automotive industry or motorsport that Sandy Myhre doesn’t know and she’s packed much of that knowledge into her latest book. One Lady Owner. Readers will find themselves far more informed after they have finished the book, and entertained as well, as they learn about Sandy’s adventures on the way to becoming one of the most highly respected journalists in the car business.

  • Geraldine Herbert, Ireland

A warm, witty and deeply inspiring journey through the world of cars, courage and change. Sandy Myhre's memoir is a celebration of passion, perseverance and the women driving the future... and is impossible to put down.
