This book is about animals only found in Australia. Baby marsupials like kangaroo joeys grow up in their mother’s pouch where they breastfeed. Echidnas and platypus are monotremes. Their babies hatch from eggs, but they are mammals and they drink their mother’s milk like other mammals do. This book is full of poems about mammals playing musical instruments. It also has some strange facts: I bet you didn’t know that wombats make cubic poo. Well now you do.

Stephen and David Isaacs, who wrote this book, are twins. The picture above shows both of them, along with their nanny and their dog, Linda.

Stephen and David are both children’s doctors. David is a paediatrician in Sydney. He is a vocal advocate for child refugees. Meanwhile, Stephen is a child psychiatrist who lives in London. He made all the illustrations in this book.

Ouch in the Pouch by Stephen and David Isaacs is a humorous book and made me laugh. It describes lots of animals and what they do. With rhymes to interest the reader, this is a great book for children to read.
