Time and again, history comes back to haunt us. How we choose to deal with it often shapes our own happiness. Can we learn to live with our own decisions and the actions of others? Is there a difference between the need to know and the want to know?

James fights to hold on to memories, which are slowly but surely being stolen from him. Will he make peace with his past before it is too late? Can this happen through telling the story of someone he barely knows?

Will Lorena cope with what she discovers about her family history? Or will it destroy her and her loved ones? Are you defined by the sins of your forefathers?

Dempsey Gray grew up in Sharjah, UAE and has since lived in Andorra, France and Spain. She and her husband Martin live with their rescued pet Terrapin, Terry, who dominates the garden near Chichester, West Sussex. With a love of travel, particularly Latin America, she takes every opportunity to meet people, enjoy local food, wine, culture and scenery of all new places she travels to. • An enjoyable and thought provoking read

Enjoyed this book immensely. I could not put it down for a number of reasons.
The author’s sensitive tale of James on his journey through life in his later years is intermingled with a gripping story, which takes you on quite an emotional journey. With a few lessons on acceptance along the way. The relationship between James and Lorena is heart-warming. The characters in the book are easy to connect with and the writing pulled at every emotion you can possibly think of. Congratulations on an epic first novel. I hope there are many more from this author.

  • Martin Blake

A lovely story sensitively told about a man's plight to deal with his own demise through dementia. As a story it journeys through the Nazi ratlines and recent history of Argentina, against the backdrop of West Sussex, England. It considers how we deal with our own emotions and those of others. With a degree of wit and charm, this beautifully told story is a worthwhile read for anyone. Highly recommended.
