Book Description

Israel, October 1973: Jason, a dashing but cynical British photographer, has been hired to take pictures for the Israeli tourist board. His local guide is Asher, brought up in London but currently alienated from her devout Jewish family. They find themselves travelling in the Golan Heights just at the moment when tanks roll in from Syria, as the Yom Kippur war starts...
Featuring wonderfully vivid evocations of London and Israel in the early 1970s and a large cast of complex characters, Michael John Pole’s The Landing Place is set at a pivotal moment in recent history, as the optimism of the late 1960s, already waning, was finally brought to a close by the global energy crisis of the early 1970s. The novel is a thrilling and suspenseful tale of danger, conflict and endurance, which celebrates the power of reconciliation and offers a wide-ranging meditation on faith in its many forms.

Michael John Pole spent thirty years seeing the world through a lens, running a commercial photography business that took him from New Zealand to Europe, Asia, and the Americas. In 2011, he moved to Australia, where he turned his creative focus from capturing images to weaving stories.

Driven by his faith and a deep, long-held connection to Israel and the Middle East, Michael writes fiction that explores profound journeys and rich histories. He is the author of the Christian book Sam and the Open Road and the historical fiction novel The Landing Place. When he isn’t writing, Michael enjoys family life in Australia.

Yakov an IDF corporal speaks the words, “inaction of good men gave evil a victory.” Through the tensions of war and impact on friends, family and work colleagues’ miles away, Michael’s book stories the hand of God at work. From the initial signs of work, one man Yakov is a listener, with a sharp mind, and an inner perception, Michael intertwines this man’s life into the lives of Jews and Christians across nations. Michael writes with a clarity of purpose, through his creative storytelling, and through the eyes of many people he has encountered in Israel and across the world. His writing paints a picture of how the God of the Bible is alive and present. Directing the paths of individuals like you and I, as well as nations. From page one, it is an old cliché, yet true as you turn page after page of Michael’s latest book, The Landing Place, you will be hungry for more, and as in the stories within the pages of this amazing book, the God of Israel will grasp your attention, and in the words from the book, of Zadkiel, “God is your guidance, your landing place”. These words encapsulate what Michael has expertly write about in graphic detail, with deep reflective emotions, bring the characters and the nation of Israel to life. A place you will long to visit after reading this book, fulfilling the core purpose of the initial chapters. I have loved the biblical and historical journey Michael takes the read on, through the lives of real people, characterised in a story of faith from the cold, wet streets of London, to the ancient city of Jerusalem. The home of Jews, Christian and Muslims, a melting pit of culture, divinity and faith. Yet thought it all, with various biblical references Michael brings the read to understand that the God Abraham, Isacc and Jacob is real, alive and wants that life-changing relationship with everyone. I have rarely read a book from cover to cover in one day. This is one of the few books I can’t stop telling friends about, see for yourself, read with an open mind as you read the words Michael has written and an open heart to the question, what if the God of Israel is real?
