Book Description

When Meg and Peg, her younger sister, explore an old watchtower on a tiny island off the coast of Spain, they meet Tony, a lizard who can grant wishes. By mistake, Meg wishes the three back to the eighteenth century.

When they meet and become friends with José and Juan, two boys from the island, the girls realize there is something wrong. What are the boys terrified of? Is it true that there could be a pirate attack at any minute?

While they help the islanders to prepare against the invasion, Meg and Peg stumble over a treasure trove and hear some scary and exciting stories about the history of the island, as well as learning more about Tony and his strange powers.

Joanne Bryan grew up on the small island of Formentera, where The Magic Lizard takes place. She loved to roam the island, listening to the local tales and myths and exploring caves and secret valleys. On retiring after a career as a musician and flute teacher, she returned to her second love: studying literature and writing stories. In writing this book, she has used her childhood memories of the magic and wonder of a remote island whose history reaches back to prehistoric times.

“The Magic Lizard” was a joy to read. The story was really gripping, and I found it exciting, well-told and vivid, as well as skilfully constructed. The normal processes which all young teenagers go through were also very well shown. Although Meg and Peg were eager for new adventures, from time to time they still longed for the safety of their parents and a home. The story definitively makes one look forward to reading more about Meg and Peg. Congratulations to Joanne Bryan – not all authors succeed in doing this! It was interesting that the author knows Formentera so well and that her childhood experiences are also a part of the story. Personally I would have enjoyed it even more if there had been a map of the island in the book, with notes about where the girls’ adventures take place. Maybe this would be an appropriate addition to the story?

The book "The Magic Lizard "is a mixture of fantasy, crime and adventure. I love these genres, so it was the perfect book for me! Joanne Bryan`s idea of introducing old tales about Formentera by way of a modern book in a library was very good. This way, historical and contemporary information could be packed together in gripping stories. The two girls Meg and Peg get braver as the story goes on, for example when they swim out to the pirate ship in chapter 13, to listen to the cres`s plans. The most important caracter is of course Tony, the lizard who can grant wishes, but only when his tail has grown back. If you know Formentera, it is amusing to recognise the different places (La Mola, thr windmill or the ice cream café) and landscapes. The book is a wonderful read forolder children, teenagers and all people with imagination!
