The book From Wellies and Chapped Legs to Brogues is a fascinating tale filled with setbacks and challenges for the main character, David. Living in dire circumstances with his alcoholic mother, life for 10-year-old David isn’t easy. Other children in the village make fun of him, but he does have one true friend, Rebecca. When David’s mother dies over the Christmas period, he spends time at Rebecca’s home before he’s taken in to care.
Escaping, he seeks solace with Hobo, a man that befriended him following an accident before he went in to care. They escape the village and Hobo sends David to live with his brother on the South Coast, where he learns Hobo’s story. Here David faces an abundance of challenges before he returns back to the village and his life intertwines with Rebecca’s once again.
